On 13 August 1888 Walt Whitman (1819-92) was working on "Leaves of Grass" - his life's poetry. Paul O'Mahony introduces one of Whitman's greatest poems "When Lilacs Last In The Doorway Bloom'd" - and reads most of the poem) from the 1892 edition). This is an elegy for Abraham Lincoln - written shortly after Lincoln was assassination in 1865. It is one of the most influential poems ever written by an American poet.
